The Division of Open Space is a part of the Bergen County Department of Planning and Economic Development. Its mission is to protect and provide additional open spaces and to maintain and enhance the quality and degree of open space throughout the County.
Open space is, essentially, land that is not developed with buildings. In other words, an area whose character is dictated by the land itself rather than what is built on the land. Open space can take many forms, including parks, forests, greenways, wetlands, and farms. Open space provides various functions such as a habitat for various plant and animal life, an environmental filter for bodies of drinking water, and a place for enjoyment of outdoor recreation activities.
