This exciting concert will feature the works of Shostakovich, Saint-Saëns, and Rachmaninoff conducted by Woomyung Choe, with soloist Ye-jin Han on the violin. The evening begins with Festive Overture opus 96 by Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) written in celebration of the 37th anniversary of the October 1917 Russian Revolution. This rousing piece "combines astonishing orchestral virtuosity and death-defying speed with instantly catchy melodies" and its fanfare will be familiar from hearing it at several sports events. Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Opus 27 by Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943), which will conclude the concert, was written when he was the conductor of the Imperial Opera at Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre. His work is "popular among music lovers for its sumptuous harmonies and lyrical, passionate melodies." . Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance at Main Violin Shop, 523 Summit Ave., Fort Lee, NJ. For information call 201-704-7584 or 413-446-6266.
