Communicable Disease

Who We Are


The Communicable Disease Control Program is a county-wide protection service that works directly with the New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH), local health departments, hospitals, laboratories, and other public health partners to prevent and control the spread of communicable diseases in Bergen County.

What We Do


Reportable Disease Program (N.J.A.C. 8:57-1)


• Conduct investigation and disease control
• Educate the community regarding disease and transmission
• Conduct surveillance and response for disease outbreaks
• Report communicable diseases and outbreaks to NJDOH

Rabies and Zoonosis Control (N.J.A.C. 8:52)


• Conduct animal to human bite/scratch investigation
• Refer and follow cases when post exposure rabies vaccine is indicated
• Partner with other divisions to ensure confinement of biting animal
• Facilitate rabies testing of animals at the New Jersey Public Health Environmental and Agricultural Lab (PHEAL) when indicated
