Mission Statement

The County Executive is responsible for the day-to-day operation of Bergen County government as well as directing long-range and short-range goals and projects that will enhance the quality of life for the residents of Bergen County. The County Executive oversees the provision of vital programs and services to all County residents including our most vulnerable populations.

The County Executive’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, direction and oversight of all Departments, Divisions and Agencies of the County; supervision, administration and presentation of a responsible budget; collection of revenues; and control of all disbursements and expenditures for programs and operations. The Executive also appropriates the necessary funds to all programs and services and obligates funding for the staffing of said programs.

The Executive negotiates and approves all contracts, bonds and documents requiring his/her signature and ensures the upholding of all aspects of proper prevailing wages and working conditions in the execution thereof. In addition, the Office of the County Executive maintains all properties, agencies, and institutions in the County’s custody.

The Executive reviews all goals, programs and initiatives put forth by County Departments, taking into account trends, necessities and required or statutory programs. Included in these efforts are assuring continued economic growth and retention, the provision and maintenance of state-of-the-art facilities including schools, and commitment and innovation are directed toward critical infrastructure projects and visionary projects that promote growth and development for individuals and businesses.

The Executive reviews, approves or vetoes all County ordinances. The County Executive shall make appointments, with the advice and consent of the Freeholder Board, to Boards/Commissions/Authorities/Departments and Divisions, which encourages citizen participation in a significant way.

The County Executive will participate in discussions at Freeholder meetings as he/she sees fit in order to provide a constant and effective means of communication between the branches of County government.

The County Executive’s primary objective is to uphold the oath of office and ensure the public trust by faithfully performing all the duties listed above and in the County Code to the best of his/her ability.
