Animal Health Technician - Division of Animal Services only hiring Per Diem
Bergen County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is looking for Animal Health Technicians to become members of our medical team. We are an open admission municipal shelter adhering to a no-kill philosophy under the guidelines of the Asilomar Accords.
Job Description & Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Renders treatment and administers medication to sick or injured animals as directed by the Veterinarian
- Performs preliminary examinations of animals to determine symptoms of disease or injury and reports findings to the veterinarian
- Assists the veterinarian preparing animals for surgical procedures in addition to sterilizing instruments, securing supplies, handing surgical instruments and disinfecting and cleaning up operating areas and equipment
- Monitors and cares for animals recovering from surgery
- Performs laboratory tests, operates x-ray equipment, cleans and disinfects kennels, cages, animal holding areas, surgery suites and examination rooms to control the spread of disease
- Under the direction of the Veterinarian, humanely euthanizes animals
- Maintain controlled drug inventory and required log books
- Establish and maintain essential medical records and files and have the ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform essential functions of the job
Requirements:
- Completion of an accredited veterinary technician program
- One (1) year experience in a veterinary office, animal hospital or animal shelter
- Ability to learn and utilize the shelter’s computer system
- License in the State of New Jersey preferred
- New Jersey Driver’s License
- Per Diem position - must be flexible to work a minimum of 19.5 hours, but maximum of 29.5
