Substance Abuse Counselor 1 - County of Bergen Department of Health Services – Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services
Under direction of a Supervising Substance Abuse Counselor or other supervisory official in a state department, local government or institution, does field and office work to provide intake, outreach, and aftercare counseling services; does other related duties as required.
Knowledge and Job Responsibilities: (may include but not limited to)
- Assist in the development of preliminary treatment and rehabilitation plans.
- Participates in initial interviews with clients.
- Participate in case, diagnostic, and progress conferences.
- Investigates and verify pertinent facts and information necessary for an effective treatment plan.
- Attend and take part in training and meetings assigned.
- Develop working relationships with community stakeholder agencies.
- Maintains an assigned caseload of clients and provides necessary group or individual counseling.
- Plans and conduct formal group discussions on a variety of subjects.
- May assist with group and recreational activities of the program and stimulate interest in and cooperation with social and education programs.
- Provides personal counsel and advice to individuals on problems related to social behavior and personal relationships.
- Participates in life safety and emergency planning activities.
- Prepares reports and routine correspondence, documents according to policy and procedure in program records in a timely manner.
- Conduct clinical intakes as assigned.
- Ability to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Education Requirements:
- Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC) or New Jersey Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (NJ CADC).
Schedule:
- Per-Diem – up to 29.5 hours per week.
- May include day, evening, weekend and holidays.
Other:
- Minimum of one (1) year experience in counseling or social work.
- Valid New Jersey (NJ) Driver’s License
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
- Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
