Greens Superintendent – County of Bergen Department of Parks – Division of Park Operations
Under direction, directs and administers a comprehensive maintenance program for regulation golf courses; directs employees engaged in carrying out the specialized maintenance program; may develop plans for improvement of golf courses; does related work as required.
Job Responsibilities (may include but not limited to):
- Thorough knowledge of the equipment and methods used in caring for and maintaining golf courses.
- Thorough knowledge of varied specialized types of machinery and equipment.
- Thorough knowledge of turf management as related to a specific area.
- Thorough knowledge of selecting and scheduling the use of fertilizers, lime, insecticides, herbicides and fungicides and of various types of grass species and the type of disease that will attack each kind of grass species.
- Thorough knowledge of various types of irrigation systems.
- Ability to give suitable assignments and instruction to employees and to provide technical advice and direction when difficult and unusual problems arise.
- Ability to establish training program that ensures effective performance of employees and to see that reasonable standards of workmanship and output are maintained and that desired objectives are achieved.
- Ability to work harmoniously with associates, citizens and others using the golf courses.
- Ability to supervise and work with supervisors and others involved with golf course maintenance.
- Ability to prepare suitable reports and keep necessary records and files.
- Ability to recognize various grass diseases and to prescribe the proper treatment.
Schedule:
- Full time /40 hours per week.
- Over time as needed.
Education & Experience:
- Five (5) year experience as a golf course superintendent or first assistant superintendent
- Possession of an Associate’s degree in Turf Management, Turf Science or Agronomy form an accredited college or university may be substituted for two (2) yeas indicated
- Satisfactory completion of a one-year program in Turf Management, Turf Science or Agronomy for an accredited college or university many be substituted for one (1) year indicated experience.
- Experience with TORO irrigation system component and pump system maintenance.
Skills and Special Requirements:
- Appointees will be required to possess a driver’s license valid in New
- Current NJ Certified Pesticide Applicators License, Categories 3A and
- Current NJ Certified Fertilizer Applicator
- Highly organized and efficient time management
- Proficient in using Microsoft office
