Department of Public Works (DPW) – Class A or B CDL Truck Driver Heavy / Road Repairer 1 / Full-Time
Under direction, drives a truck with tandem/dual rear axles, to transport materials, equipment or people; performs other related work as needed.
Job responsibilities:
Duties may include but are not limited to:
- Drives trucks with tandem/dual rear axles to pick up, haul, and deliver materials
- Receives written and/or oral assignments and drives trucks of varied types including trucks used for road maintenance and construction work and road oiling, snow plowing, and ice control work
- Picks up, load trucks and deliver materials of varied types
- Operates snow removal equipment to keep roads clear
- Checks, cleans, greases, washes and performs the required adjustments to trucks and other auxiliary equipment
- Collects, loads, and unloads, with and without assistance, various types of equipment furniture, laundry, food products, coal, ashes, garbage, trash and delivers same by truck to specified destinations
- Drive truck equipped with dump body to transport and dump loose materials such as sand, gravel, and bituminous paving material by pulling levers and turning cranks to tilt body and dump contents
- Must inspect truck prior to operating for proper amounts of fuel, oil, water, and to see that tires are inflated and that lights and brakes work properly
- Digging trenches and perform manual grading
- Shovels gravel, sand, asphalt and snow
- Aids in oiling and greasing machinery and equipment of varied types
- Mixes cement and mortar
- Installs drain pipes and catch basins, lays pipe, and paints guard rails
- Maintains grounds
- Operates, checks, services, and makes minor adjustments and repairs to trucks and construction and maintenance equipment
- Perform manual labor under all weather conditions
- Helps load and unload trucks
- Repair potholes
- Cuts down brush and trees and digs out stumps
- Operates trucks for snow plowing and salting operations
- Is considered an essential employee and will be needed to work multiple hours and/or shifts for Snow Control and any and all emergency situations that may arise
Requirements:
- One (1) year of experience in driving a truck with tandem/dual rear axles and auxiliary equipment such as snow plow, salt spreader, power take-off, winch, and lift body
- Possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license
- Possess a minimum Class B CDL (Commercial Driver’s License)
- Possess a Tanker Endorsement for CDL or have 90 days to procure one
- Ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication
