PROJECT BACKGROUND

The non-profit organization Passaic River
Rowing Association (PRRA) has partnered
with the Bergen County Parks Department
since 2003. Since then, boats have been
stored in a makeshift structure known as the
"Train Tunnel" which was used decades ago
by the Department of Parks as part of a
children's railroad attraction. While PRRA has
organized fantastic community rowing
events and 300+ people row with them every
year, a new, modernized Rowing Center will
enable them to include more Bergen County
residents in their programming and connect
a larger audience with the sport of rowing.

This state-of-the-art two-story 14,285 sq. ft multi-purpose rowing center replaced an existing one-story 2,600 sq. ft. structure used as a makeshift boat storage facility. The construction of the rowing center satisfies growing demand for public access to Bergen County waterfronts and rowing activities with more efficient and increased boat storage, as well as improved instructional and meeting spaces. It provides access to rowing for both novice and advanced users, creates opportunities for youth activities that promote teamwork, health, and bonding, and brings more opportunities for the public to enjoy Bergen County’s Riverside County Park and the Passaic River.
