Assistance for Pet Owners

BCAS provides assistance to pet owners under the following programs: Surrender your animal to BCAS

Surrender your animal to BCAS

If you are unable to personally find a new home for your pet, you may bring your dog, cat, or small animal to BCAS, Monday through Friday between 1pm and 5pm. We are an open-admission shelter and will accept pets of residents from our contracted towns which can be foun on this page . Please bring with you any veterinary records you have for your pet. There is a $50 fee to surrender a dog, $30 to surrender a cat and $15 to surrender small animals.

If space permits, and with the approval of the Director, the Shelter may accept a surrendered pet from a non-contracted town.  The surrender fee is doubled.

Contact breed-specific or foster-based rescue groups

Rescue groups that focus on caring for and helping families re-home a specific breed are available for almost any type of dog. Organized by people who have extensive knowledge of a specific breed, these groups provide a variety of opportunities for your pet, including the possibility of your pet staying in foster care until a new home is found.

Emergency Boarding

The Shelter will provide up to 30 days of Emergency Boarding, space permitted, in the case of a crisis situation.  The program provides relief for families facing a temporary hardship or displacement due to domestic violence, emergency medical issues, and other urgent needs that prevent them from caring for their pet.

Approval is dependent on available space and cannot be guaranteed.  For more information, contact the Shelter at 201-229-4600.

Deceased pets

If your pet passes away, you can bring it to the Shelter for proper disposition of the remains.  There is a fee of $50 for dogs, $30 for cats or $10 for small animals for this service.

If you need Animal Control to come to your home to pick up your deceased pet, there is a fee of $125 for dogs, $105 for cats and $85 for small animals for this service.  You can call 201-229-4616 to make arrangements with Animal Control.

If you would like a private cremation company to pick up your pet at the Shelter, you will need to contact them directly.  Fees for those services are in addition to any of the fees above and payable to the company you select.  Below are some companies you can call:

Pet Rest in Peace
Faithful Companion
Snow Mountain Pet Memorial Park
