The Office of Environmental Health (OEH) enforces environmental and public health laws that protect natural resources and promote health and safety within Bergen County.

What We Do:

The Office of Environmental Health (OEH) offers three programs:

CEHA

The County Environmental Health Act (CEHA) on behalf of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Programs include:

• Air pollution control
• Safe drinking water
• Water pollution control
• Solid waste control
• Noise control
• Local hazardous waste materials emergency response/GIS
• Pesticide compliance
• Diesel enforcement 

Public Health Protection

Through shared services agreements with local municipalities, the OEH provides public health protection services on behalf of local boards of health as mandated by New Jersey’s Public Health Practice Standards of Performance. Public health protection services include:

• Sanitary operation of kennels, pet shops, shelters, and pounds inspections
• Retail food establishments and food and beverage vending machine inspections
• Youth camp safety inspections
• Public recreation bathing inspections
• Body art procedures inspections
• Tanning facility inspections
• Child care center inspections
• Animal bite investigations
• Public health nuisance code ordinance enforcement
• Public health complaint investigations
• Reportable foodborne illness investigations
• Reportable foodborne/communicable disease outbreak investigations

Clean Communities

The OEH is the authorized Clean Communities program coordinator for Bergen County. The Clean Communities program is funded through the NJDEP and is a comprehensive, county-wide litter-abatement effort that emphasizes education, enforcement, and litter removal. This program provides mini-grant funds to non-profit community based organizations that conduct litter removal activities on public lands located within Bergen County.  Learn More »

Emergency

Non-Emergency

For any non-emergency situation or investigations, call 201-634-2780. We are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

BCDHS Involvement

The BCDHS is under contract with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to provide environmental services and carry out enforcement when necessary. Other areas in which the BCDHS is active include:
